Sept. 15 - Hungry Horse

I did find a hungry horse but this horse was not our destination.

One Hungry Horse

We drove to a place called Hungry Horse to see the Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir.   Actually we drove up some pretty primitive roads.  Roads I would call two track road.

The Hungry Horse Dam was completed in 1953 and is Montana's highest and the eleventh largest concrete dam in the U.S.   It is located very close to the Glacier National Park.  The dam is 564-foot in size and is located on the South Fork of the Flathead River.  The Hungry Horse project got its name from two husky freight horses that worked in the wilderness of the Flathead River.  They wandered away during the severe winter of 1900-01, and struggled for a month in belly-deep snow.   They were found so starved and weak that much care and feeding was needed to nurse them back. The name Hungry Horse stuck and has been given to a mountain, a lake, a creek, and  the dam.

Fire Route Road

Many of those are carved out thru the forest as a fire route.  All day long all we saw in the line of wildlife was the horse I just posted and it sure didn't look wild.

The road we traveled

Road up over the Dam - Fall is here

Tailgate Lunch

Half way up the mountain we stopped for our lunch.  We normally pack a lunch because up in the wilderness there isn't any places to eat.  This just worked better for us.

Lion Lake on the way back

Lion Lake is 35 acres in size and is located one mile from Hungry Horse, MT.  It is a very popular lake for people who like to fish as there are a lot of rainbow trout, native bull trout, and cutthroad trout in the lake.

Another shot of Lion Lake

We had a very short day today.  Kay and I decided to try out the four wheel Polaris RZR so we took it for a spin.  Those are major fun.

Barn Shot of the Day

While riding in the RZR I was able to get this shot.  Seems like every shot I take is going at a high rate of speed.  Well okay so maybe we were traveling only about 40mph.

We met up with Kay and Joe later for a wonderful Mexican dinner which turned out to be very close to where we are staying.  Kay and I made plans to spend the day together tomorrow while the guys will do their own thing.  Jim said he was going to wash the truck.  Yea..... It's hard to believe that tomorrow will be our last day here in Kalispell as the days have just flown by.  We will most definitely return.
